Thanks for the comments! This is a locking stifle, also called upward fixation of the patella, or delayed patellar release. Did you know that horses can lock their hind legs in extension? When the hind leg is locked, they don't have to use muscular effort to keep the joints extended. This is how they can sleep standing up so that they are ready to run off if a predator approached them (they would be more vulnerable in the wild while laying down). It's all good until the lock engages at the wrong

Upwards fixation of the patella, otherwise known as locking stifles is a problem some horses suffer from,it causes the hind leg to lock and effects normal movement, our vet Austin Fanning has performed a few of his corrective procedures here at IHWT with great success. Sandys problem was bilateral so she had to have two procedures performed on her,we are very lucky to be able to have these things performed on site and as you can see Sandy is doing really well ❤️🐴❤️ Happy Wednesday ❤️ If you wou

What Are “Sticky Stifles”? Also known as upward fixation of the patella, this condition involves the horse’s kneecap momentarily sticking or catching, which may result in an uneven gait, tripping, or the leg appearing briefly “locked” in extension. What Might Contribute to Stifle Catching: 1. Muscle Weakness – Underdeveloped hindquarters or core may limit joint support. 2. Conformation – Horses with straighter hind limb angles may be structurally predisposed. 3. Growth and Development – Young ho

Chronic stifle discomfort in young horses is often tied to early developmental changes. Subtle issues in bone formation that may not be visible from the surface. This is where imaging becomes essential. With light sedation to reduce stress and movement, we evaluate the patellar ligaments, femoral trochlear ridges, and surrounding structures for signs of incomplete bone development, inflammation, or congenital defects. Identifying whether we’re looking at structural abnormalities or simply inflam

💈IRISH CLIPS💈 This is basically a higher version of the bib clip, and great for horses in light to medium work. It’s a very quick and easy clip to do, so it’s ideal for a first clip or youngster. Hair from the neck, shoulders and belly is clipped. The line can be adjusted higher or lower to suit your needs. You can also choose how far back to clip - you may choose this clip if your horse is particularly sensitive around the stifle area and gets ‘kicky’ as you can avoid this area if needed. Mos

Happy 4th Birthday to the single piece of kit that saved Chip’s endurance career. 🎂🐴 If you’ve ever managed a horse with back pain, you know how incredibly frustrating and heartbreaking the saddle search can be. Before we began working with Jeremy Rudge Saddlery back in 2022, Chip had been through eight different saddles. No matter what we tried, we were constantly battling loin pain. What changed everything was going completely bespoke. Jeremy Rudge took templates of Chip's back, matched the

The muscle that swings your horse's front leg forward starts on its head 🐴 The brachiocephalicus runs from behind the ear down the neck to the upper leg. The latissimus dorsi pulls the leg rearward, the big triceps straightens the elbow, and the biceps helps lock the leg when your horse dozes. Have you ever noticed your horse's neck working as it walks? Follow for more horse anatomy. #anatomy #EquineAnatomy #Horses #HorseLovers #Equestrian #muscles #DidYouKnow #animalfacts
