For 38 planes—and nearly 7,000 travelers—that was Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. On September 11, 2001, 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers were ordered to immediately divert and land in the small, rural Canadian community of Gander. Locals called it 'The Day The World Came to Town'. That story eventually became one of the biggest Broadway hits of the last decade.
