Charlie Tran • Jazz Piano Coach on Instagram: "It takes deliberate practice and lots of time to really apply a concept into your playing. But when we could just put on another Youtube video and feel good about ourselves for understanding a concept.. we continue avoiding the required process for truly applying a concept into our playing. So then you keep watching video after video, feeling good about understanding all these concepts. But your playing has remained exactly the same. Get out of the

It’s important to make sense of every single note of a lick or any piece of soloing language. Because eventually, you’ll start to recognize similar patterns everywhere and that’s how language development starts. #bebop | Charlie Tran Piano

Learning to play over chord changes shouldn't be complex, even for beginners. Now, it can definitely be tricky to be able to seamlessly switch between scales while maintaining focus on chord tones, but that's about as tricky as it gets in the early stages. What I often find is beginner students looking for complex scales way too soon, and trying to change scales for every chord. What you should do instead is simplify the process by finding the least amount of scales to get the job done, and to d

There's a reason why so many jazz beginners get stuck playing LH 7th chords while the RH plays the melody. Because it's easy. You just have to learn how to construct 7th chords and just play them in root position everytime and you're done. And you might even be satisfied with that, so no need to look any further! But, that isn't jazz. And if you're after that authentic, solo jazz piano sound, then my spread voicings series is what you're looking for. The series contains several courses laid out

Nothing can improve your playing if you don't have a strong sense of rhythm. And I mean NOTHING. Here in this video I demonstrate a deceivingly challenging comping rhythm, the Red Garland rhythm, as a way for you to test your rhythm. Make it a goal to get this rhythm at a faster tempo like 200 bpm. If you currently can't do it, then you need to prioritize it. Because even if you play the prettiest notes.. it'll sound bad if the rhythm is bad. So, it's in your best interest to address your rhythm

Over the rainbow.. but with all suspended chords 👀 This is one of the ways I practice specific chord qualities - not just by moving it around like a technical exercise, but by using the melody of a song as the guide for the chord voicings. Technical exercises, like moving voicings around chromatically, can be good for building muscle memory - but what happens when you need to voice those chords over progression and melodies you're unfamiliar with? I've been there, and that's why somewhere along

Chord-scale theory isn't new. But, without proper guidance from a teacher, so many learners continue thinking in chord-scale theory for way too long and not realizing it's what's holding them back. Chord-scale theory is just the way in, but many student I've worked with have come to me not knowing that their soloing has been stuck for years due to the constraints of chord scale theory. It's like training wheels - it'll at least keep you from falling over when you're learning which makes the proc

These two tips helped me transform my chords into those big, lush chords we hear in jazz. Now, I'd be lying if I said these two tips were "plug and play" in every single situation - because they're not. They a great place to start, but eventually you learn that there's always more nuance to any simple tip. Spreading out the notes of a chord results in what are known as spread voicings, and if you want a step-by-step approach to learning, building, and applying spread voicings to your playing, th

Just transcribed this bit and thought I’d share. Oh, I forgot to mention - this is literally right after I inputted the notes into notation software, so I didn’t really practice it. How did I memorize it so quickly, though? Two things. 1. When transcribing, you play the same bits over and over trying to figure out the notes and the timing, so you’re learning and practicing the phrases as you transcribe. 2. The more experience you have, the more you start to see all the same pieces of jazz langua

Charlie Tran • Jazz Piano Coach on Instagram: "Notice how I start off with root notes in the bass and then go into rootless voicings, and finally put the root back in for the final resolution to the tonic. This creates a sense of textural tension which makes the final resolution even more satisfying when we hear that low root note on the tonic. If you're wanting to play jazz standards as a solo pianist but have no idea how to play big full voicings like you see in this video, then you need to le

We see this all the time when looking at solos from the greats - playing over the bar. This is part of the language, and immediately communicates that you're in control of the harmony instead of reacting to the harmony as soon as it changes. Your soloing will have more a natural, human flow to it rather than sounding so robotic due to the predictability of outlining the next chord change starting on beat 1 for every bar. Pull up any Charlie Parker solo and you're guaranteed to see this happening

Dominant chords are your moment to create a lot of tension, so take advantange of using notes outside of the key! However, it can be tricky to know where to start. So here's an easy way to create some more tension on your dominant chords - using a diminished arppegio. But here's the thing - it's pretty simple but it's also used all the time in jazz. This isn't a shortcut to give you shorterm results - you'll actually take this arpeggio with you all throughout your jazz days. And most importantly

Okay maybe I'm not exclusively using the notes from a Bb major scale, but those are the notes I'm thinking of. All the other 5 notes that aren't in the scale? I'm only using them to lead me to the notes of the major scale. There's a couple ways I'm doing this such as using enclosures, arpeggios, neighbor tones, passing tones, etc. But, once again.. there's no other scale being outlined here but the major scale! Once you learn some of the tools I just mentioned though, you still have another job

My response to @joshtrendinh about adding jazz to songs! Well, the answer is a simple one but it's a long process: you just have to learn how to play jazz! If you want to add, let's say, Italian flavor to your food, you ~could~ just google something up real quick and it might just do it for you. But, if you want that AUTHENTIC Italian flavor in your food, you're gonna have to spend some time cooking up authentic Italian dishes. I've tried the second method of googling quick tricks on how to jazz

If you're playing the blues, then the minor blues scale by itself won't cut it. You'll need to learn about the major blues scale and ways to weave to the two together. This is what makes the blues unique - the mixture of major and minor tonalities which we don't really see anywhere else. And if you're serious about making real, measureable progress in your jazz piano journey and you're ready to commit to making the necessary changes to your current practice habits, mindset, and knowledge in orde
