Payment apps PayPal and Venmo hit with outages on Thursday, Oct. 16. Thousands of users reported issues to Downdetector.com
TEXAS – A widespread Amazon Web Services outage disrupted thousands of websites and online services Monday morning, affecting major platforms including Venmo, Hulu and McDonald’s. AWS first reported the “operational issue” at 2:11 a.m., with the cloud computing giant later indicating significant progress in restoring services.
The popular peer-to-peer payment platform Venmo went down on Monday, October 20, one of several apps taken offline amid widespread Amazon's AWS service outages.
According to Down Detector, which tracks reported outages for services, both PayPal and Venmo saw a surge beginning around 11 AM ET that lasted for well over an hour. PayPal hit nearly 10,000 reports, and Venmo wasn't far behind at over 8,000.
Outage reports peaked for Venmo around 11:50 a.m. EDT with over 8,300 users on Downdetector noting issues, but outage reports dropped sharply in the early afternoon. Users reported issues accessing the app and logging in, according to the site.
PayPal and Venmo are both experiencing outages as of the morning of October 16, with thousands of reports suggesting a widespread issue.
