New England Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt isn’t giving Drake Maye a pass for the numerous turnovers. Many have chalked those struggles up to a rookie quarterback learning at the NFL level. However, Van Pelt shot down the rookie excuse when speaking with media members on Wednesday.

The Patriots took two more rookies late in the draft. Quarterback Joe Milton III, a sixth-rounder, has yet to be active as the third-stringer behind Maye and Jacoby Brissett. Bell has played 33 offensive snaps with one 1-yard catch.

With the Patriots finding their quarterback in Drake Maye, New England's main free agency goal is building the roster around him.

Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden had high praise for New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye. Gruden, who now works at Barstool Sports, is famous for his quarterback evaluations. His “Gruden’s QB Camp” television series was a must-watch for football junkies everywhere.

Maye is tied for sixth in the NFL with 11 turnovers. He’s lost four fumbles and had thrown 11 interceptions. He ranks third among qualified quarterbacks with a 4.6% turnover-worthy play rate, which is a PFF metric. Since taking over the starting role in Week 6, he leads quarterbacks with 14 turnover-worthy plays.

The New England Patriots’ rookie class has not gotten off to the start many would have hoped. That is beyond No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye, who has been overall impressive in his first career seven starts.
