At least five people were killed as Storm Bert battered Britain with 80 mph winds and torrential rain, causing widespread flooding, cutting power to homes and businesses and wreaking road, rail and air travel chaos.

Storm Bert’s “devastating” impact across the UK will continue into Monday with commuters facing chaos across the country. Torrential downpours led to the deaths of at least four people, as hundreds of homes were left underwater, roads were turned into rivers and winds of up to 82mph were recorded in some places.

Torrential rain doused most of the country, stymying travel and leading to widespread flooding, landslides, fallen trees and power outages.
